The Gilgo Beach Murder Case: What is Rex Heuermann Accused of?
In one of New York’s most infamous cold cases, Heuermann is accused of the first-degree murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Lynn Costello. Their bodies were discovered around the vicinity of Gilgo Beach, each covered in hunting camouflage burlap and placed roughly a quarter mile apart.
All victims were in their twenties and worked as escorts, disappearing between 2009 and 2010. Additionally, the remains of Maureen Brainard Barnes, who went missing in July 2007, were discovered alongside the other bodies, disposed of in a similar fashion. Heuermann has not been charged in Brainard Barnes’s murder but remains a leading suspect.

Despite Heuermann’s arrest, the investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders continues as police sift through leads and evidence. This includes items such as a belt with a single initial found on one of the victims and the tracking of throwaway mobile phones. As the nation watches, the mystery surrounding the infamous Long Island serial murders may finally be reaching its conclusion.
