What You Need To Know About Soffit and Fascia Installation

Soffit refers to the piece covering the roof’s underside section that juts from the house’s side. Fascia is the trim piece extending from the edges of the roof from the eaves side. The roof fascia covers the space between the roof and the soffit.

The soffit and fascia are essential for the house’s aesthetics and maintenance. Installing the soffit and fascia is crucial as it protects the building’s exterior structure. These materials help protect the home from the elements. This article explores everything you need to understand about soffits and fascia.

The Materials Matter

The soffit and fascia have several things in common. First, they both help in completing the function and design of the roof siding. Usually, they are installed on the roofline and often next to each other. Most people confuse the two despite them being very different from each other.

Soffit panels have numerous perforations which act as vents that allow for airflow. They are installed to boost ventilation. To install the soffit, the horizontal area under the roof overhang is covered with vents allowing them to pass through while keeping the insects out. Besides its functionality, the soffit is also installed for aesthetic purposes.

On the other hand, fascia boards go under the vertical side of the overhang. It mainly serves as a support for the shingles and also acts as the surface to which the gutters are attached. To further ensure that the fascia boards don’t rot, a metal fascia wrap is used to protect them. The wrap is also crucial as it prevents the need for continuous painting.

With a better understanding of what these materials are about, it is necessary to get the installation right.

Start by Measuring and Cutting the Soffit

Before installing the soffit panels, measure and cut them to size. In most cases, the panels come in different sizes. The most common are 12 feet long and 12 1 inches wide. These sizes are sufficient to fit in J-channel and F-channel trims that hold the soffit panels in place.

Using heavy-duty snips and wearing safety goggles, cut the panels. Alternatively, use a portable saw with backward fine-toothed blades. Make sure the panels are 14 inches shorter, allowing for thermal expansion.

Nail the Soffit panels.

Once you have the right panel sizes, slide the first into the receiving channel. It would be best to have a carpenter’s square to properly square the panels to the house. Next, nail the panel into the fascia board. To join the next panel, slide the grooves into the panel before it and proceed to nail it in. Keep repeating the process until the entire length of the wall is covered.

Proceed to Install the Fascia Wrap

Note that the fascia wrap can be made from coil stock, a more customized option. Alternatively, one can choose the prefabricated one made in industries as it is easy to work with. If you choose the custom option, you will need a brake that experienced experts must handle.

Prefabs are easier to use on DIY projects since they have already been made in the industry. All you have to do is confirm the wrap size and put it on the board.

Ensure the wrap fits snugly enough to hold the new soffit panels correctly. The trims should be secured with nails. If the gutters are still in place, then you have to size up the wraps properly since they have to go up to the anchors of the channels.

Professional Installation is more Advised.

Installing a soffit and fascia is not a minor investment. Even so, it is a worthwhile investment considering that this elevates your house’s aesthetics and helps protect it against weather elements. They contribute to having a long-lasting and well-protected home for years.

However, since not everyone is a DIY expert or enthusiast, there comes a time when professionals have to be involved. In such instances, you are open to having a variety of designs and styles from the experts.

Walk through the installation process with the company you choose to work with. The advantage of working with professionals is that they help you decide on the right kind of soffit and fascia for your home.
