John Mulaney Baby J Review Do you know John Mulaney?

John Mulaney has been performing stand-up comedy for more than ten years. On April 25, 2023, he will record his most recent and third stand-up special for Netflix, the streaming king, which will be his first since 2018.

His earlier programmes include Comedy Central (2012), The Comeback Kid (2015), and Kid Gorgeous (2018), the latter of which earned him an Emmy for best writing for a variety show.

Popularity of John Mulaney Grew

Many strange and unusual things occurred during the pandemic, many of which made the news for even more absurd reasons. John Mulaney was one of them and made headlines for all the unexpected reasons. Mulaney had a lot to say, and he effortlessly dropped it in bits and pieces in a hilarious, somewhat self-deprecating style. He had a lot to offer, from entering rehab when his friends intervened to his divorce and a new relationship with Olivia Munn.

Baby J review: Damaged John Mulaney kills in new Netflix special

John Mulaney: Baby J Review

Without introducing himself, Mulaney decides to open up to a large crowd at Boston’s Symphony Hall about his life. He makes jokes about a dramatic intervention and a period in rehab.

The beginning is somewhat out of the conventional because he begins with a tale from his youth. He tells the same old story about how older siblings try to terrify you by claiming that one of them is adopted, but his siblings had all the bases covered so that their lie could never come to light.

Mulaney recounts a joke about growing up. He related how, as an attention-seeking youngster, he had noticed that, in his school, pupils were given more attention in the event of a death in the family. In order to receive this particular treatment at school from the teacher and other students, he would therefore hope and pray that one of his grandparents would pass away. Mulaney delivered a great opening monologue.

He went on to discuss his attention-seeking tendencies and the foolish things he would do to grab people’s attention. The entire introduction is a strong beginning that piques one’s curiosity about what else he will be talking about during the evening. After a humorous tune that initially sounds rather regular before taking a dark turn, the true “wide-ranging” conversation begins.

Mulaney notices a young person in the crowd just before he launches into his joke about the experiences, he has had over the past several years. The things I talk about tonight that I did recently, just don’t, he told the child and the audience. Even the idea that someone would bring their 11-year-old child to a stand-up special made me laugh.

Music and Direction

He shares that the music is provided by singer-songwriter David Byrne, who even made an appearance in The Sack Lunch Bunch. It is directed by Alex Timbers, who also helmed and executive produced the 2018 show. It lasts for approximately one hour and twenty minutes.

The Most Special Aspect

Mulaney wrote one of the best stand-up specials by himself. I’m sure Mulaney found telling the tale of his intervention to be quite therapeutic, but what really jumped out was the way it was put together and written.

He carefully planned out the arrangement such that you were simultaneously moved to tears of laughter and empathy. This served as yet another example of why the best comedians are those who make their specials relatable and invite you into their life. Hearing him talk about all of these well-known individuals who assisted with the intervention is one of the things that makes the special so fantastic.

It was amazing to hear the breakdown of the entire joke, from bringing up Pete Davidson as the potential culprit to Nick Krull rejecting the notion of everyone quitting drinking to the hilarious part about nobody recognising him at the rehab. While Mulaney’s return to the stage is somewhat what one might have anticipated, it’s unquestionably different from before, and over time, his behaviour is also evolving.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the standup was quite amusing and funny. I would give the beginning of the show a good rating, but it loses steam towards the halfway point then picks up again with his media shenanigans, of which he had no memory at all.

If you’re a fan of the comic and have been anticipating his new special, you won’t be let down because he gives his best, most polished performance.
