UNDERSTANDING EYELID SURGERY

Eyes are considered to be the windows of the soul. They can express emotions that even words can’t. With time, the signs of ageing begin to appear around the eyes. This could be in the form of wrinkles, crow’s feet, or sagging and puffy eyebags. All these can have a significant impact on your appearance and even confidence. Blepharoplasty Toronto is a cosmetic surgery that can target various concerns like sagging and hooded appearance of the upper eye and tightening the loose skin. You can choose to undergo the surgery on the upper or lower eyelids or both. We are here To help you understand the basics to make an informed decision about the blepharoplasty procedure.

How is blepharoplasty performed?

For the blepharoplasty to be performed, the patient is put under general anaesthesia or conscious sedation (IV sedation). While designing the surgery, the anatomy and surgical goals of the patient are kept in mind. The process will be discussed with you well in advance. You can choose to recontour both eyelids or one of them. Different techniques are used for the upper and lower eyelid also depending on the concerns targeted. Following are the different approaches that are followed.

Upper Eyelid: During the upper eyelid procedure, the incisions are well-hidden inside the eyelid crease or closed to the lower lash line. Through the incision, the surgeon can remove the desired amount of tissue that will smoothen out and contour the lids. Fat might also be removed or repositioned as per requirement. The incisions are closed using fine sutures, you will not be requiring any bandages after that.

Lower Eyelid: Two techniques are popular for performing blepharoplasty in the lower eyelids. For targeting undereye bags, the transconjunctival approach is used. This approach is undertaken for younger patients as they have firm and elastic lower eyelids. For performing the surgery, a small incision is made inside of the lif to smoothen the eyebags. There is no visible scarring from this method. When the patient is older with more fine lines and wrinkles. The subciliary approach is used. In this method, a thin incision is made close to the lower eyelashes. This allows the loose skin to be trimmed away, and puffiness is reduced. After the incision heals, the scar is almost invisible.

What does recovery look like?

After the surgery, you can return home the same day with a friend, or a family member. Before leaving, you will be given a prescription for antibiotics, eyedrops and pain medication. You will also be provided with instructions on how to take care of your eye. Doing a cold compress for the first 24 hours can be helpful. It is recommended to take a week off and take ample rest in this while. The stitches are removed roughly after 5 days. You might experience swelling and bruising. To reduce that, ensure you keep the head and shoulders elevated. Avoid bending over and doing strenuous activities, as it can increase blood pressure. The swelling will reduce drastically within 7 days.
